We Test the Tacx Genius

It’s a remarkable piece of kit, but we wanted to give the Tacx Genius an in-shop test. And to do that we invited in one of our Pedalsport Club riders to ride the early miles of the Tour of Flanders and experience for himself the sophisticated motor brake system that exactly replicates the resistance a rider would actually experience on a stretch of road displayed on the machine’s screen.

It’s fair to say that, despite the distracting environment of the shop, our test rider enjoyed the experience, blasting along for 30 minutes thoroughly entertained and engaged by the experience – you can’t say that about many “static” trainers, can you?

These are Tacx’s own words on the Genius (try their own promo video too)

With the Tacx i-Genius Virtual Reality trainer cycling becomes a celebration. This top trainer offers unlimited entertainment while riding indoors. The attractive thing about a VR trainer is that the race is displayed on the screen of your PC and true-to-life terrain mapping signals are transmitted by the trainer’s brake to the bike. On a climb you can feel the gradient through the rear wheel and downhill you feel like you have wings.

The i-Genius works with the Tacx Trainer software 4, Advanced. With this ultra-modern software you enter virtual worlds which are even more real while riding on your Tacx trainer. You can’t tell the world on your screen from the real world. Riding races draws you in and is so realistic that it is possible to protect yourself in the back of the virtual peloton as you hide yourself from the wind. But keep in mind that your virtual opponents behave realistically, which means they can jump away from you at any time. So be aware.

The i-Genius is the same trainer as the i-Genius Multiplayer. The difference is that it comes with the Skyliner front wheel support and not with the 1 year Multiplayer license and the BlackTrack steering frame, options that can be purchased later if desired. But even without these extras the i-Genius is an absolute top trainer providing unlimited entertainment in combination with the Tacx Trainer software 4, Advanced. Both climbs and descents feel very realistic.
